II. The New Deal: Roosevelt’s Response
III. Reforming Capitalism: Balancing Socialism and Liberalism
How did Roosevelt show a way to solve the first major crisis of capitalism?
- Read the documents and highlight the information that seems most useful to you.
- You are in 1936, during the presidential election between two major candidates (Republican Alf Landon and Democrat Roosevelt). The crisis has lasted for seven years now, and Roosevelt has already served one term. Write a dialogue between the two. One defends Roosevelt and the New Deal, while the other supports capitalism without government intervention.
- Create a campaign poster (just one, either for or against the New Deal). Present it to the class at the end.
